Friday Night Wrap Up

Friday, May 20
The Friday Wrap Up
·         To wrap up yesterday, I did finally see the team and the rest of the Drake party.   The players were having fun bartering with the local street merchants.  They were seeing who got the best deals.  It reminded me of when I took a trip with my dad to Drake football game in Las Cruses, NM and took the team over to Juarez to barter with the locals.
·         I overheard an ISU grad, a doctor on the trip, say, “We could not take a trip like this.  We would have had people in jail after the first night.  These are special kids.”  That is what makes me proud to be a Bulldog!
·         I had dinner in the Hatari! Bar in the hotel.  It is where John Wayne hung out when he was filming the movie.  They have posters up of the movie everywhere.
·         I was dining alone.  The good part is that I had what they called an Arusha Burger and Heinz Katchup.  In the states we would have sent it back, here is was wonderful.
·         I was the only white guy in the bar.  Two women sat right by me.  One was giving me the eye, waving and saying “Jambo.”  All of a sudden she was sitting with me.  She told her friend to go.  I quickly assessed that it wasn’t my good looks… She was a hooker.   I kept looking at the John Wayne poser and asked , “What would The Duke do to get out of this?”  Just then, the Drake party came down to the bar, including the president, David Maxwell.  There, I am sitting with a hooker.  That gave me an out to leave to go be with my friends.  Of course, Maxwell said, “How much will you give me not to tell Carla?”
·         It was a fun night after that having beers with Barb Cox, Rich Anderson, a Bulldog Board member and a fellow Blue Cross person, and the a few of the  player’s parents.  Tom Westbrook, one of my grad school professors even made the trip.
·         It turns out that the hooker did not go home empty handed.  There was another white guy that took her up to his room for about 10 minutes.
